Gowanus III
About
In 2006, before the glass towers, infrastructure overhaul, and subsequent rapid development arrived, Gowanus moved at the pace of its own shadows. At night the neighborhood felt suspended in time — a tangle of brick warehouses, corrugated metal, and half-forgotten loading docks glowing under sodium streetlights. I wandered its edges with a 6x6 camera, letting long exposures translate the darkness into unexpected colors: rust turning violet, concrete warming to ember. The canal, still and opaque, carried the scent of industry and tides. Silence pooled in the corners of vacant streets, interrupted only by the hum of distant traffic and the occasional machinery sighing itself to sleep. In those hours, Gowanus revealed its quiet, vintage industrial beauty — a version of itself that Yeslonger quite exists.
